Treasure Planet is without a doubt one of my favorite Disney movies. It is so fun and unique, in a setting we very rarely get to see Disney movies in. For John Musker and Ron Clements, it was a passion project that kept getting postponed so they could make other bombastic blockbusters. After the success of The Great Mouse Detective, then-CEO Michael Eisner asked for new pitch ideas. M & C pitched an adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, and a high-concept idea that was basically Treasure Island… in space. We all know which of these was greenlit first.

So they made The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin, and Hercules, and after all these, FINALLY were allowed to make Treasure Island.

Anyway, I wanted to make something that, like Treasure Planet, allowed for some unique interpretations, and was mostly round in shape. So I decided to make some truffles, because they are shaped like planets, and you can change fillings and toppings as desired for infinite possibilities!

For this recipe, you will need:

  • 1 1/2 cups dairy-free chocolate chips, such as Enjoy Life
  • 1/4 cup coconut milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp salt

Some ideas for add-ins or toppings:

  • dried fruits
  • cacao nibs
  • chopped nuts
  • cocoa powder
  • sugar and cinnamon mix
  • crushed pretzels
  • sprinkles

To start, melt the chocolate chips in the microwave or over a double-boiler until just melted. Then, place the melted chocolate with all other ingredients (minus the add-ins) into a food processor and blend it all together until smooth.

Once smooth, add in any… well, add-ins, and pulse thoroughly. I chose to split my chocolate base into 3 smaller batches. One batch would not receive any add-ins, one batch got the addition of peanuts and pretzels, and the final batch was mixed with dried cranberries and walnuts.

Once you have your chocolate mix, or mixes, scoop out spoonfuls to make one-inch balls, and place them on a parchment-paper lined baking sheet to sit in the freezer for about 10 minutes.

Roll them out so they are smoother, and coat them in the topping of your choice. (I left one batch plain, one batch in sugar, and one batch in cocoa powder.) I also tried to spray them with gold luster dust, so they might look like Jim’s map, but it didn’t really show well.
