Oh Brother Bear, what an interesting movie. I do enjoy it, though most of that is attributed to Joaquin Phoenix’s performance and me having a soft spot for media that explores sibling dynamics. There’s no specific connection to blackberries other than I could make a pun out of it, though.
What you will need for this recipe:
- 5 cups blackberries
- 1 TBS cornstarch
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 3/4 cup old-fashioned oats
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 5 TBS coconut oil, softened but not melted (refined has less coconut flavor)
This is a pretty standard crisp. Preheat the oven to 375F and prep a 9×9 baking pan. Stir together all the filling ingredients (blackberries, cornstarch, brown sugar, 1/2 tsp cinnamon), then pour it into the baking dish.

Then, in a separate bowl, mix the flour, oats, sugar, vanilla, and the other 1/2 tsp cinnamon. Once they’re all mixed, add the coconut oil, and rub it in gently until the mixture makes a breadcrumb-like texture. Sprinkle the crisp topping over the blackberry mixture.

Bake it for 25-35 minutes, and serve with vegan ice cream ❤
