Here’s an interesting idea– take a food from the movie that is not meant to be consumed by people, and make it into something that still looks like cat food, but definitely doesn’t taste like it. Also, make it vegan. This was no easy task, but I settled on a custard for the gel look of wet cat food, plus some whipped cream for volume, and Cocoa Puff kibble on top. Oliver approves!

So here’s what we need for this recipe:

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1 tsp cocoa powder
  • 4 “egg” yolks (I used Bob’s Red Mill egg replacer)
  • 2 3/4 cup soy milk
  • 3/4 cup soy whipping cream + 1 cup for whipping
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract + 1/2 tsp for whipped cream
  • 2 TBS powdered sugar
  • 2 TBS vegan butter
  • Cocoa Puffs

First, in a large pot, whisk together the sugar, cornstarch, and cocoa powder. Then, with the heat on medium, whisk in the milk, cream, and fake egg yolks. Whisk it together continuously until the liquid is frothy.

Whisk in the vanilla, and continue to whisk custard mixture until the liquid thickens and bubbles. Remove it from heat. Mix in the cold butter until it melts, then transfer the custard to a bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and press so it is touching the custard. Chill for 8-10 hours.

Before serving, prepare whipped cream by mixing whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla with a hand mixer until soft peaks form. Scoop the custard into a small bowl, top with whipped cream, and sprinkle a few cocoa crisps on top.
